Logical structuring of a website is a method of organizing large volumes of data to help users extract information easily and efficiently. Since extraction of information requires in-depth knowledge of relevant technologies the extraction process becomes slow, tedious and frustrating for ordinary users.
Over the last few years several softwares have been developed and built into the Information Extraction (IE) systems of the World Wide Web to address the problem of information overload faced by the end user. Web site designers and small business owners should consider this when they design a website. Only a website which is well structured and presented in a user friendly format will interest a user. It has to provide the necessary information quickly as well. When building a website the directory structure should be created first as this provides a clear understanding on what information should be presented to the user through the website. The directory will also contain sub directories which level down providing specific information. Logically an ideal website should have a basic structure that can be expanded as and when required without the need for much modification to the existing structure.
A website is usually compared to a tree structure wherein there will be a broad category which will have sub categories and sub sections which can have list of information. The basic rule here will be to create separate directories for each category and then create sub directories within each of these categories. This ideally helps in creating a place within the sub directories so that more categories can be included as and when required. The logical structuring of a website facilitates mapping of information and thereby providing the required specific information when the user seeks for it.
While structuring a website the following things should be borne in mind it should be simple, user friendly and facilitate easy navigation. We should also have a clear understanding of the customer after all the website is created for them. If a site is very small where there is not much content to offer then everything can be presented in one page but for sites with magnitude of information a logical structuring is essential. Information has to be presented through a main page which will have links facilitating navigation to internal pages providing more information on relevant topics. Logical structuring of a website will help the user easily navigate across the pages and look for information which is of his interest. While designing a website one has to consider the logical parameters so that they get listed under the right category or segment under the World Wide Web. |
